Community Medical Doctors (formerly Area Medical Officers) provide services in three key areas, relating to Early Years Child Health and Development, School Health services and Vaccination programmes, and Disabilities assessment and intervention.

  • In relation to the Child Health Screening and Developmental Surveillance programme to monitor children’s development at home from birth up to 5 years through a series of standard regular checks, Community Medical Doctors provide specialised clinics for referrals from the Public Health Nursing service. 
  • As part of the school surveillance programme for children in Primary School up to First Year in Post Primary, Community Medical Doctors run the school immunisation programme
  • Community Medical Doctors also have some involvement on the Disability Forum which assesses referrals.

Target Groups: All children, aged 0 – 12/13 years; children and young people with disabilities

Referral: Referral through HSE Primary Care
