Adult Mental Health Services

Adult Mental Health services are community-based and organized as Community Mental Health Teams (CMHTs) providing mental health assessment, interventions, treatment and outreach support services, which meet the needs of individuals in terms of their age, location and specialist care requirements. In the North of the county, there are two CMHTs, one based in Nenagh and one based in Thurles: in the South of the county there are three such CMHTs, one based in Cashel and two based in Clonmel.

The services delivered include the following:

  • Adult Community Mental Health Services
  • Adult Community Day Care Services
  • Outreach Services
  • Psychology Treatment Services
  • Social Work Services
  • Multi-disciplinary Case Conferences, Crisis Intervention and Urgent Assessments
  • Domiciliary Visits by members of the CMHT
  • Provision of Therapy Sessions
  • Liaison with Community Groups
  • Mental Health Addiction counselling for adults with a dual diagnosis of mental health issue and addiction


Other Adult Mental Health Teams include:

  • Psychiatric of Later Life Teams
  • Rehab and Recovery Teams: These treat people with severe and enduring mental health conditions, usually referred by one of the other Mental Health Teams. A Peer Recovery Worker is a member of this team in the South of the county, providing formalised peer support and practical assistance to service users.
  • Mental Health Out of Hours crisis service in the North of the county: North Tipperary Mental Health Services provide an Out of Hours nursing service with a nurse on duty from 4.00 p.m. – 3.00 a.m. seven days per week covering both the Thurles and Nenagh sectors.
  • In both the North & South of the county, the Hospital A&E Departments have qualified clinical psychiatric professionals to engage with Out of Hours referrals.

In the case of adults with acute mental health conditions, needing residential treatment and care, they can be referred to acute psychiatric units. These are i). the Department of Psychiatry Unit, St. Luke’s Hospital, Kilkenny for patients from South Tipperary, and ii) the Department of Acute Psychiatry, Ennis General Hospital, for patients from North Tipperary.

Eligibility: Adults, aged 18 years and upwards presenting with the following Mental Health conditions:

  • Depression/ mood disorders
  • Anxiety
  • Psychotic illness
  • Suicide and self-harm
  • Personality disorders
  • Eating disorders
  • Adjustment disorders

Referral: Access to this service is made via GP, Caredoc/Shannon Doc (6pm -8am) or the A&E Departments respectively of Tipperary University Hospital, Clonmel (for the South of the county) or of University Hospital, Limerick (for the North of the county). An outpatient appointment for the appropriate mental health team is then organized and referral to other mental health resources may be offered, including Psychologists, Community Mental Health Nurses, Social Workers, Occupational Therapists etc.
