Extern provides services for children and young people within a continuum of services that is preventative in design, ranging from diversion through to intensive community high support programmes.

  • The Janus programme works intensively on a one-to-one basis with young people aged 10-17 years, who are living in the community or within the care system, and whose behaviour is challenging, posing a risk to either themselves or to others. Extern provides an individually-tailored support programme in response to the needs of these young people to support them to remain at home or at the lowest level within the care system. The project is aimed at improving young people’s social functioning, community inclusion and family relationships.
  • The Creative Communities Alternatives (CCA) programme is a community based programme that works intensively on an individual basis with young people who are either on the edge of care or currently in alternative care. It provides prevention through creative community solutions and the coordination of multiple services looking for alternative solutions within communities, focusing on improving problem solving, coping skills & self-efficacy for young people and their families to help improve outcomes. The young person’s voluntary participation is required on the programme.
  • The Emergency Time Out Service provides up to three nights emergency respite for young people who experience placement breakdown.
