Ophthalmology (Eye) service

The Community Ophthalmology service provides services to children referred from the childhood vision surveillance and screening programme, commonly undertaken by PHNs from birth to the end of Primary School. The service consists of:

  • Medical eye examination
  • Assessment and treatment of squint or lazy eye
  • Prescription of spectacles when required
  • Referral for surgery or hospital treatment when appropriate.

Other categories of service-users also avail of the service (see Eligibility below)

Eligibility: All Pre-school and Primary School children; all Medical Card holders; all with a diabetic condition; and all with a Hepatitis C diagnosis.

Referral: Referral by GP or Consultant. Referral of children by PHN through the school-based childhood vision surveillance and screening programme. Referral can also be made by GP.
